NCTIES16 - Re-imagine your PLN
I presented with my partner-in-crime Tavia Clark on the benefits for educators who are connected to a professional learning network online via social media. While we prefer Twitter, much of what we discussed and curated resources on can be applied to other avenues, including blogs. The presentation and resources can be found at bit.ly/ncties16PLN

Collaborate with teachers across your building and inspire students to discover their interests with the use of virtual field trips. Virtual field trips are a fun, engaging way to enrich curriculum, use technology, and build relationships with teachers that will lead to more collaboration. By inviting classes to embark on a virtual field trip in your library, you will also have the opportunity to demonstrate inquiry learning – a skill that is essential across elementary and secondary. Bring your laptops and tablets to explore examples together and share ideas with other librarians! Experienced “guides” are encouraged to bring their own examples to discuss successes and ways to make them work in various content cores and grade levels.
Some videos and articles about inquiry to help encourage teachers to team up with librarians and think about tackling real problems and inspiring students to be curious, seek answers, and develop in the classroom!
At the 4 minute mark, Musallam talks about his 3 rules to spark learning: Curiosity + Process + Reflection = Success. A short, but wonderfully inspiring Ted Talk.
My favorite Ted Talk, ever. Robinson is an education visionary who seems to really understand the rotten roots of the system, and has realistic, yet innovative solutions to change the landscape. At the 6 minute point, listen to how he emphasizes the importance of CURIOSITY. We really need to remember that the goal of education should be students gaining knowledge and skills through process (and failures), and that teachers are there to inspire, encourage, guide, mentor, and engage... not just an "information delivery system."
Below are a few articles I have found that I can be shared with teachers in your schools to provide encouragement and support for teaming up with SLMS's to conduct inquiry-based learning and Virtual Field Trips. There are also a few links to other websites to explore further:
