Ms. Chelsea has a lot of enthusiasm, so this was not just a lecture-style assembly... oh no! It was extremely interactive and we had no issue getting students in K - 5 to give their undivided attention. Not only were they drawn in by the picture book/chapter book she read from, she showed off some of the prizes they'll win over the summer, the awesome costumes they can build each time they attend the hour-long program, and talked about some guest visitors like scientists from the NC Aquarium, a beekeeper, and firefighters. Perhaps the most exciting part was a game she played to go along with the theme of trying to catch the BOOK BANDIT. 3 "Minions" of the book bandit were caught in "webs" by our super side kicks to prove that they are willing to read lots this summer and help take down the villain! Every grade level LOVED this activity, and afterwards, Ms. Chelsea led them in a LOUD cheer (which may have gotten some remarks from our neighbors down the hall)... I like the kids to know it's their library and its great to get excited about reading!
I've heard that more students have preregistered this year than years past, and many of the faces are NEW to Ms. Chelsea, which means these assemblies had an impact. I'm excited to attend a few of the programs this year to see Ms. Chelsea in action, and get to keep encouraging our kids to READ over the summer!
